I have been waiting for a few days to catch the right time of day to take this picture. I noticed when I was just looking at the milkweed near sunset that the backs of the leaves looked very detailed and had a nice warm glow to them, but didn’t take a picture at the time. So, just today, the conditions were right and I took it.
This is the Common Milkweed Flower. It is a very different color, but you can see how the structure of it is quite similar to the Butterfly Weed flower. They must bloom at rather similar times. I did not get a good whiff of the Butterfly Weed, but this Milkweed from our backyard is rather aromatic and smells great.
Took this shot of some beautiful Butterfly Weed while at the Effigy Mounds National Monument. I just learned while looking it up that it is a kind of milkweed, one of my favorite plants from our backyard. We have seen it around the roadsides in Minnesota as well, it adds a beautiful splash of color. Normal milkweed attracts all kinds of unique insects, which have been featured in my Photo of the Day before. They are also hosts to Monarch Butterfly larvae. Tomorrow I will post up a picture of the flowers from our milkweed for contrast.
