Ants and Aphids on a Maple

Ant and Aphid Group

This picture was surprisingly difficult to take! It shows a few ants alongside a group of aphids on the back of a maple leaf. They have been up there all day today, just holding on despite the wind. They look so fragile, but I am guessing they are pretty safe, unless some other bugs come in to attack. I like the overall picture for the shape of the leaf here, but you can’t see the aphids too well unless you zoom in, and even then it isn’t perfect.

Ants have a symbiotic relationship with aphids, where they drink the sugary nectar the aphids produce and protect them from predators. You can read more about this at Aphid-Herding Ants. It is a very interesting ecological relationship.
